The Young and Dynamic Principal – Fr. Dr. Savio Abreu SJ
A Jesuit priest who hails from Porvorim, Goa; he was born on 12th June 1972 and completed his high school education from Don Bosco High School, Panaji with a distinction. He finished his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Goa University in 1992 with a first Class and joined the Society of Jesus on 30th May 1992. After completing his novitiate at Xavier Training College, Belgaum in 1994, he switched from science to arts and did his Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Pune with a first Class in 1996. After completing his Philosophy studies from Sacred Heart College, Chennai in 1998 and his Bachelor of Theology studies from Vidyajyoti College of Theology, Delhi in 2003, he was ordained a priest of the Goa Jesuit Province on 28 December 2003. His PhD in Sociology from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2011 is a sociological study on New Christian movements in contemporary Goa. He has published three books so far, Goa 2011: Reviewing and Recovering Fifty Years (Concept 2014, edited with Rudolf C. Heredia), Public History of Goa: Evolving Politics, Culture and Identity (Cinnamon Teal Publishing 2019, edited with A. da Silva and R. D’Souza) and Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames: A Sociological Study of New Christian Movements in Contemporary Goa (Oxford University Press, 2019). He has also presented many papers at local, national and international seminars and conferences and has published more than twenty articles in several edited volumes and academic journals.
Since his ordination he has worked in various capacities and offices such as Coordinator of Goa Province Commission for Formation from 2006-2009, Administrator & Research faculty of Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR), Goa from 2004-2010 & then Director of XCHR from 2011-2018, Coordinator of Goa Province Commission for Higher Education from 2013-2018, Member of the Board of Studies for Sociology, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts & Science, Autonomous, Goa from 2015-16, Assistant Professor of Sociology & Anthropology at St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai from 2018-20, Member of the Women’s Development Cell, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai from 2018-20 and Member of the Governing Board of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai from 2019-20. After being in the field of higher education and research for 15 years, he willingly accepted to take over as Principal of St. Paul’s High School, Belgaum from 1st June 2020.
Besides academics and research he is very much interested in sports, music and outdoor activities like trekking and exploring new places. He has represented Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Goa and IIT Bombay in volleyball and has coached the St. Paul’s school volleyball team.
